WHY?!
WHY MUST YOU SUBJECT ME INTO GETTING A 980 INSTEAD?!
WHY?!?!

Just run the iGPU for a month or two?

iGPU?
Edit: I’m stuck with an old AMD Phenom II X6 CPU. No integrated GPU, sadly.

I have a 980, brand new Asus gaming computer for my Vive..... I heard this new one will be like $360? I might go for it.

That’s the 1070 model - with the Founder’s (reference design, lol) edition $100 more.
It’s pretty much the same thing for the 1080 ($599 regular).

You may want to change that out as well. It might be a bit underpowered to keep up with a 980.

A phenom II would probably bottleneck a 980.

What CPU would you recommend?

Should I go for the FX-8350?

A new i5, like the i5-6400. I wouldn’t recommend any AMD CPUs right now.

Welp, time to get a new Mobo, waterblock and CPU.

Water block? Air cooling works just fine. Also you’ll need new ram if you get a 6th gen Intel CPU. DDR4 now.

Had to rely on liquid cooling for my old AMD build because of how much heat it makes.

Well mine works fine, so I will wait to upgrade.

Yeah, that’s why you’d want an Intel CPU. AMD can still do OK on price/performance basis, but they run hot (and thus loud) compared to Intel’s offerings.

That’s pretty much why I watercooled the Phenom II box after seeing how much heat it produced. After that, it wasn’t so much a bother anymore.

I need a new GPU (still running a Radeon 7870, which doesn’t really cut it for driving my 2560x1600 display in newer games). Waiting until I see what the Polaris offerings look like though before getting something new. AMD has said that there won’t be high-end Polaris parts, but it sounds like there could still be something in the $200-$350 range, which would be interesting. I’d also like to see if the current Accelero S3 will fit, or if there needs to be a new version, as I really like having a passively cooled card.

Yeah, water cooling is interesting, but I don’t trust pump noise. I just use a big heatpipe cooler with a very quiet fan to cool my i5-2500k (which still hits 4.5Ghz).

Yeah, the pump noise would be an issue. I actually had to go for one of those reservoirs that has the pump installed into it. It’s not as loud as being outside but I could still slightly hear it.

Yep did the same. Didn’t put my new i5 in my old custom water case (served me well from p4 through haswell) because it overclocks and runs cool enough for air. Plus air has come a long way. I got one of those massive heat pipe towers with the 150mm ugly brown fans. Bit quieter than the H2O tbh.
10/10 would recommend

I’ve got a 780 in my current machine and didn’t feel the 900 series was enough of an upgrade for me to replace it. But then I upgraded my monitor from 1920x1080 to 3440x1440 and yeah, now I need one.
I too am growing impatient at waiting for it to release.

Good luck getting your hands on one when it comes out.
